BOS trip to Ireland

The first day (May 18th)

by Frank Hintz and Jannek Fahrenkrug

We met in the morning at 3 AM in Itzehoe, but some people were missing. After some phone calls Nicola and Steffi arrived just in time. At the same time in Elmshorn Misses Kluthe looked for the meeting point. After 45 minutes she and the others found the big parking lot of the electronic store, the second meeting point.

On the way to Berlin we made two short breaks and arrived at the airport Berlin Schönefeld at 9 AM In the duty free area we waited for our gatenumber and puzzled over the flight city Olbia. Chrysoula suggested the town in United Arab Emirates and Mister Hamester told us the truth, that Olbia in fact is in Sardinia.

In Dublin we got a bus only for us to come to our hostel. There everyone explored the facilities of the hostel.

We slept with 8 people in 20 m2 rooms and enjoyed the beautiful smells of worn shoes. Then we started our first city visit and met famous restaurants like Mc Donalds, Burger King or Subway. There were no prices for students and we thought that we paid too much. In the evening we went to an Irish pub and made the first taste experience with Guinness.

Dublin rallye and Guinness brewery (May 19th)

by Sophie Burmeister and Chrysoula Kalliora

After our terrible night in our miserable beds with the unusual bedlinen and the magnificient breakfast, which consisted of a selection of toast, toast and cornflakes, we met at 9 AM in the lobby.

The tasks for this day were to take part in the Dublin rallye and visit the Guinness brewery. We were devided into 8 groups. The first 4 groups started with the rallye and the other 4 went directly to the brewery. After 4 hours and lots of footache we swapped the tasks.

The rallye gave us the chance to see important sights, like the Trinity College, Ha'Penny Bridge, The Spire and the Temple Bar Area. We also got to know the Irish hospitality and learned to be more open towards the English speaking natives. At the Guinness brewery we didn't only get to know the history of Guinness but also the taste of it, when we sat on the 7th floor and had a beautiful view over Dublin while enjoying a pint of Guinness.

But the highlight of this day was "Penney's". A beautiful, excellent store where not only the girls left their money, but also the boys. After these impressions we had to chillax in the Temple Bar with typical Irish live-music and of course another pint of Guinness. Even the teachers aquired a taste for it.

At 2 AM the girls went to bed happily (because of the shopping) and the boys drunken (because of the Guinness) :).

Trip to Killarney (May 21st)

by Thessa Witt and Oliver Mack

In the morning of May 21 we had to be prepared for our trip at 9:30 from Dublin to Killarney.

We knew that the trip would go right across Ireland and take as long as the first trip from Itzehoe to Berlin, round about 6 hours. So we had a short breakfast in the "former church" (cantine of the hostel) while listening to the songs of Amy Winehouse.

Just sitting in the bus music was turned on and we discovered a nice book Natasha had read. It was called "The Best Sex" and we started reading out loud the sex short stories one by another - it was a lot of fun! During these funny moments we enjoyed the beautiful landscape.

Then we had a small stop in Limerick where we could get something to eat or use the given hour for other things. So most of us went to "Penney's" where we baught some sommer clothing on the pretext that we weren't prepared for such a weather in Ireland. When we entered the bus again we already worried how we could get all the stuff onto the plane.

Short time later we arrived in Killarney where we baught the whole food for the coming weekend at Lidl. 15 Minutes later we passed a forest which bordered at a manorial entrance and led us immediately to the even more manorial hostel. It was a real manor called "Aghadoe House".

Our group cheered and thanked Hami for his choice. Since we weren't very happy of the hostel in Dublin we hadn't had great expectations. The weather was great so the first impression was stunning enough for us to take a lot of photos.

The hostel inside wasn't much better than in Dublin, but the athmosphere was compensating. After a short stay in the different rooms we discovered the area surrounding our hostel - beautiful, even though a few of us head to fight with hay fever.

Then it was time for dinner (spaghetties, sausages, salads, rice...).

The rest of the day we spent outside until some bitsy and nerve-racking flies disturbed the chillaxed athmosphere. Full of expectations and satisfaction we went to bed.

A lovely trip to the "Ring of Dingle" (May 22nd)

by Jamel Zoubi

After the morning had begun with a delicious breakfast, we immediately started a bus-trip to the "Ring of Dingle", a peninsula in south-western Ireland. First of all we stopped to see the unique cliffs of the Ring of Dingle. On those cliffs we became witnesses of the antique celtic lifestyle, which we discovered in the ancient stone houses.

After a few hours of looking at the beautiful ring by sitting in the bus and listening to our driver John singing Irish traditionals, we finally stopped at the beach and enjoyed the sun. Then we saw a hundreds of years old church, one of the oldest churches in Ireland. In the end the highlight of the day came: shopping at an original "Lidl", which let us feel, what we in German call "Heimatgefühle".

What did we learn at the 24th of May 2010?

by Franziska Timm and Matthias Schulz

The last day of our class trip to Ireland started early at 07:30 AM when we left the beautiful area around Killarney and our bus driver / city guide / entertainer John, who taught us how to sing in Ireland, took us back to the Irish metropolis Dublin.

On our way we stopped to climb the "Rock of Cashel", which is also known as "St. Patrick's Rock" or "Cashel of the Kings", one of the most spectacular and most visited tourist attractions in Ireland. The Rock of Cashel was the seat of the kings of Munster for several hundred years. In the 5th century St. Patrick decided Cashel to become seat of bishops. It has a character of its own and is one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture to be found anywhere in Europe. And so, we also got to know some Irish history. However, we were not only impressed because of its history, but also because of its commanding presence.

Our musical bus tour went on and almost everybody used the next few hours to get some sleep, so when we arrived in Dublin at 03:00 PM, we were very chillaxed and ready to have some action again.

Some of us decided to visit "Jameson Distillery", a famous whiskey distillery, to learn how to drink in Ireland, as alcohol seems to play a very important role there. Others wanted to experience the Irish clothing culture and finally supported the Irish economy by shopping at "Penney's", which became our favorite shop because of its cheap and chic products. The rest of us enjoyed the last opportunity to visit some sights of the capital. In the evening, everyone was back at the hostel to eat spaghetti bolognaise for the last time of our trip and to get dressed for the final night at the Pub round the corner. All of us expected a cosy evening with some Irish beer, snacks and nice talks about the past days. But inside the Pub, we realized that there was a big party going on. While the girls danced to original non-Irish music, the boys were very busy with entering and leaving the Pub, because of the drink vouchers, which were given away at the entrance. And so we learned another very important thing from the Irish people: How to celebrate in Ireland.

The last day (May 25th)

by unknown

Most of us stood up at 4 o'clock in the morning. The weather was wonderful and we could see the blue sky. At 5 o'clock we drove with the bus to the airport. Our departure was at 7.40 a.m. (Irish time). At 11 o'clock (German time) we arrived in Berlin. Many people slept during the bustour from Berlin to Itzehoe. The traffic on the freeway was good and so we arrived punctually in Itzehoe at 5 PM.
